Senglea — known in Maltese as L-Isla — is one of Malta’s Three Cities, a trio of fortified peninsulas enclosing the Grand Harbour on its southern side. Together with Birgu (Vittoriosa) and Cospicua (Bormla), Senglea forms one of the most historically layered areas in the Mediterranean — built by the Knights of St John, tested during the Great Siege of 1565, and heavily bombed during World War II. What remains today is an authentic, residential Maltese neighbourhood with some of the most dramatic harbour views on the island.
The Grand Harbour & Marina — 5 min walk
The Grand Harbour marina fronts the Three Cities waterfront and is lined with superyachts, traditional dgħajsas, and a growing number of waterfront restaurants and bars. The Safe Haven Garden at the tip of Senglea’s peninsula offers one of the most photographed viewpoints in Malta — a direct panorama across the Grand Harbour to Valletta’s bastions and skyline.
Birgu (Vittoriosa) Waterfront — 10 min walk
Cross into Birgu for the most complete dining and evening experience in the Three Cities. The waterfront promenade along the marina is lined with restaurants and wine bars, all with direct views of the Grand Harbour. Fort St Angelo dominates the headland. The Inquisitor’s Palace and the Malta Maritime Museum are both within easy walking distance.
Valletta Ferry — 15 min walk
The Three Cities Ferry departs from the Birgu waterfront and crosses the Grand Harbour to Valletta’s Lascaris Wharf in approximately 15 minutes — far more enjoyable than the bus.
Cospicua (Bormla) — 5 min walk
The third of the Three Cities sits at the head of the two creeks dividing the peninsulas, with the American University of Malta campus now bringing new life to the area.
Parking
Street parking is available in and around Senglea at no charge — a genuine advantage over Valletta, Sliema, or St Julian’s.
Valletta — 15 min by ferry / 20 min by car / 30 min by bus
The Three Cities Ferry from Birgu waterfront is the fastest and most scenic route — a 15-minute crossing to Lascaris Wharf. By car, head northwest via Paola. By bus, routes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 213 connect to Valletta Bus Terminal.
Malta International Airport — approx. 15–20 min by car
One of the closest residential areas on the island to the airport. Taxi approximately €15–20.
Sliema & St Julian’s — approx. 20–25 min by car
Head northwest toward Valletta and continue north along the coast road.
Mdina & Rabat — approx. 25 min by car
Head west via Paola and Qormi, then follow signs for Mdina.
Marsaxlokk Fishing Village — approx. 15 min by car
Head southeast toward Żejtun. The Sunday fish market is a must.
Golden Bay & Għajn Tuffieħa — approx. 40 min by car
Head northwest via Valletta and continue through Mosta toward the west coast.
Gozo Ferry (Ċirkewwa) — approx. 50 min by car
Head northwest via Valletta and St Paul’s Bay. 24-hour service with regular crossings.
