Balluta Bay is one of the most central and walkable locations in Malta. Situated between Sliema to the west and Paceville to the east, it sits at the heart of the island’s busiest coastal strip — with a small sandy beach, a waterfront promenade, a leafy square, and a dense concentration of restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops all within a 1–5 minute walk of the property.

The Bay & Promenade

Balluta Bay itself is defined by three things: the small sandy beach with shallow, calm water popular with families and swimmers; the iconic neo-Gothic Carmelite Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which overlooks the bay from the waterfront; and the Art Nouveau Balluta Buildings, among the last remaining of their style in Malta. Balluta Square — the tree-lined square directly above the bay — is one of the area’s main social hubs, surrounded by café terraces and buzzing year-round.

Restaurants, Bars & Cafés

The Balluta Bay and Spinola Bay waterfront between them form the most restaurant-dense stretch in Malta. At Balluta Bay itself, NAAR Restobar offers brunch, cocktails, and dinner with outdoor waterfront seating. Sundays in Scotland — one of Malta’s best-regarded café and patisserie brands — has one of its outlets directly on the bay. Bocconcino, La Crema, Piccolo Padre Pizzeria, and a string of seafood and Mediterranean restaurants line the short walk east toward Spinola Bay.

Beaches & Swimming

Balluta Bay beach is a short sandy stretch with shallow water — good for families and casual swimming. Rocky lido-style swimming spots line the promenade in both directions. St George’s Bay (Blue Flag beach) is a 10-minute walk east in Paceville and is the most popular sandy beach in the area. Exiles Bay, a popular rocky swimming and sunbathing spot, is a short walk further along the promenade toward Sliema.

Shopping

Mercury Tower Shopping Centre and Bay Street Shopping Complex — both major retail destinations — are within 5 minutes’ walk.

Nightlife

Paceville, Malta’s main nightlife and entertainment district, is a 5–10 minute walk east. It ranges from casual bars and live music venues to late-night clubs. The bay itself is lively in the evenings but not directly in the nightlife zone — guests benefit from the energy of the area without the noise of Paceville itself. Please note: St Julian’s is a lively area, particularly in summer. Guests who prefer a quieter environment are advised to bear this in mind.

Parking

Street parking is available on surrounding streets. No permit required, though spaces in peak summer can fill up in the evenings.

Balluta Bay sits at the midpoint between Sliema and Paceville, making it one of the best-positioned locations on the island for exploring Malta without a car. Most of what guests will want on a typical day is reachable on foot. For further destinations, Bolt and buses are both convenient.

Spinola Bay & Paceville — 5–10 min walk

Head east along the seafront promenade for the LOVE monument, the Spinola Bay waterfront restaurant strip, and Malta’s main nightlife district in Paceville. St George’s Bay Blue Flag beach is a further 5 minutes beyond Spinola Bay.

Sliema — 10–15 min walk

Head west along the seafront promenade toward the Sliema waterfront, The Point Shopping Mall, and the Sliema ferry to Valletta.

Mercury Tower & Bay Street Shopping — 5 min walk

Two of Malta’s main shopping centres are within easy walking distance of Balluta Bay.

Valletta (Capital City) — approx. 20 min by car / 25 min by bus

Take routes 13, 14, 16, 212, or 222 from the Balluta Bay bus stops. By car or Bolt, follow the coast road south toward Sliema and continue to Valletta. The Sliema Ferry is also an option — a 10-minute crossing from the Sliema Ferries terminal (15 min walk or short Bolt ride).

Portomaso Marina — 10 min walk

Head north through Paceville toward the marina. A good spot for an evening drink with a different atmosphere from the main promenade.

Mdina & Rabat — approx. 30 min by car

Best reached by car or Bolt. Head toward the centre of the island via Birkirkara.

Three Cities (Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua) — approx. 20 min by car

Malta’s most historically rich area. Accessible by car or by ferry from the Sliema waterfront.

Golden Bay & Għajn Tuffieħa — approx. 35 min by car

Malta’s most scenic west-coast beaches. Recommended for a half-day trip — best reached by car or Bolt.

Gozo Ferry (Ċirkewwa) — approx. 40 min by car

Head northwest through St Paul’s Bay. 24-hour service with approximately 45-minute frequency. Bolt or car hire recommended for a Gozo day trip.

Taxis & Bolt

Bolt is the most practical option for point-to-point journeys across Malta. Downloading before arrival is strongly recommended.

Car Rental

Available at the airport and in Sliema. Malta drives on the left.
