Few places in Malta carry as much history as the Three Cities. Senglea — L-Isla in Maltese — sits on a narrow fortified peninsula enclosing the southern side of the Grand Harbour, alongside Birgu (Vittoriosa) and Cospicua (Bormla). Built and fortified by the Knights of St John, the area played a central role in the Great Siege of 1565 and endured heavy bombing during World War II. Today it remains one of the most authentically Maltese urban neighbourhoods on the island, largely untouched by the commercial development found in Sliema or St Julian’s.
The Grand Harbour & Marina — 5 min walk
The waterfront marina is lined with superyachts and traditional dgħajsas, with a growing number of bars and restaurants facing the harbour. The Safe Haven Garden at Senglea’s tip is one of the most iconic viewpoints in Malta — a direct panorama across to Valletta’s honey-coloured bastions.
Birgu (Vittoriosa) — 10 min walk
Birgu’s waterfront promenade is the social heart of the Three Cities, with marina-facing restaurants and wine bars drawing visitors from across the island. Fort St Angelo, the Inquisitor’s Palace, and the Malta Maritime Museum are all within easy reach on foot.
Valletta Ferry — 15 min walk
The Three Cities Ferry crosses from Birgu waterfront to Valletta’s Lascaris Wharf in around 15 minutes. A far more enjoyable route into the capital than any bus.
Cospicua (Bormla) — 5 min walk
The third of the Three Cities connects the two peninsulas at the head of the harbour creeks. The American University of Malta is based here, adding a younger energy to the area.
Parking
Street parking in Senglea is free and generally available — a significant advantage over Malta’s busier tourist areas.
Valletta — 15 min by ferry / 20 min by car / 30 min by bus
The Three Cities Ferry from Birgu waterfront is the most enjoyable route — 15 minutes across the Grand Harbour to Lascaris Wharf. By car via Paola. Bus routes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 213 connect to Valletta Bus Terminal.
Malta International Airport — approx. 15–20 min by car
Among the closest residential neighbourhoods to the airport on the island. Taxi approximately €15–20.
Sliema & St Julian’s — approx. 20–25 min by car

Mdina & Rabat — approx. 25 min by car
Head west via Paola and Qormi toward Mdina.
Marsaxlokk Fishing Village — approx. 15 min by car
Head southeast toward Żejtun. Sunday morning fish market is one of the best in Malta.
Golden Bay & Għajn Tuffieħa — approx. 40 min by car
Head northwest via Valletta and Mosta toward the west coast beaches.
Gozo Ferry (Ċirkewwa) — approx. 50 min by car
Northwest via Valletta and St Paul’s Bay. 24-hour crossings, approximately 45-minute frequency.
