Għadira Bay is Malta’s largest sandy beach and one of the most relaxed corners of the island. The area has a distinctly unhurried pace — wide open sea views, clean water, and enough to keep you busy for an entire stay without ever needing to leave.

Beach & Swimming

Għadira Bay stretches for several hundred metres of golden sand, with calm, shallow water that makes it one of the safest swimming beaches on the island — popular with families, snorkellers, and paddlers. Sun lounger and parasol hire is available directly on the beach in season. A rocky swimming spot sits just a one-minute walk from the building for those who prefer quieter, uncrowded water entry.

Water Activities

The bay is home to several water sports and activity operators. Windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, boat trips, snorkelling tours, and jet skiing are all available steps from the property, typically from May through October.

Hiking & Nature

The Mellieħa area is surrounded by some of Malta’s best walking terrain. Trails lead along the coastal cliffs toward Ras il-Qammieħ and offer dramatic views over Gozo. The Foresta 2000 nature reserve is a short drive away. Popeye Village — the original film set, now a family attraction — is less than 2km west along the coast.

Food & Drink

Nora’s Lounge Diner (directly adjacent to the building) is a local favourite for lunch and dinner — seafood, grills, and Maltese staples in a relaxed setting with outdoor seating. Several other restaurants, cafés, and bars line Triq il-Marfa within a few minutes’ walk. The Mellieħa village centre, a short drive or uphill walk, has a wider selection of restaurants, bakeries, and a supermarket.

Culture & Sightseeing

Mellieħa’s hilltop parish church and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa are among the most visited religious sites in Malta. The Tunnara Museum (Westreme Battery), a short walk from the property, offers an insight into the area’s wartime and fishing heritage.

Parking

Street parking along Triq il-Marfa is generally available and free of charge. No permits required.

Sunsets

The northwest-facing position of Għadira Bay produces some of the best sunset views in Malta, directly from the seafront. No travel required.

Mellieħa is one of Malta’s best-connected areas for exploring the island. Below are the key destinations and how to reach them from Għadira Bay.

Valletta (Capital City) — approx. 45 min by car / 90 min by bus

Take bus routes 41, 42, 49, or 250 from Għadira toward Valletta. By car, head south through Mosta and follow signs to Valletta. Parking is available at the Park & Ride in Floriana.

Mdina & Rabat — approx. 35 min by car

Head south toward Mosta, then follow signs to Mdina. No direct bus from Mellieħa — change at Valletta or use Bolt. Best visited by car or as part of a day trip.

Sliema — approx. 40 min by car / 75 min by bus

Head south along the main road toward St. Julian’s and continue along the coast. By bus, take routes 41 or 42 toward Valletta and connect to Sliema from there.

St. Julian’s & Paceville — approx. 40 min by car

Head south through Bugibba and St. Paul’s Bay, continuing along the coast to St. Julian’s. The N11 night bus also runs from Ċirkewwa through St. Julian’s for late-night travel.

Marsaxlokk (Fishing Village) — approx. 55 min by car

Head south toward Valletta, then follow signs southeast. Best reached by car. The Sunday morning fish market is worth the trip.

Gozo Ferry at Ċirkewwa — approx. 10 min by car / 15 min by bus

The ferry terminal is just 4km north of the property — one of the area’s biggest advantages. Ferries run 24 hours, approximately every 45 minutes. Bus routes 41, 42, 101, and 221 all pass through Għadira toward Ċirkewwa.

Golden Bay & Għajn Tuffieħa — approx. 15 min by car

Two of Malta’s most scenic sandy beaches, a short drive south. Accessible by bus route 101 during summer months.

Taxis & Bolt

Bolt (ride-hailing app) works well across Malta and is the most practical option for point-to-point journeys. Standard taxis are available at a higher cost. Downloading Bolt before arrival is recommended.

Car Rental

Strongly recommended for guests who want full flexibility. Rental companies operate in Mellieħa and at the airport. Malta drives on the left.
