Marsaskala is a genuine seaside town on Malta’s southeast coast — popular with Maltese families, divers, and travellers looking for a quieter, more authentic alternative to the busier resort areas. Built around a narrow natural harbour, the town has a relaxed, year-round character with a well-used promenade, a busy dining scene along the waterfront, and easy access to some of Malta’s best natural swimming spots.

The Promenade & Waterfront

Triq ix-Xatt, the main promenade, runs along the bay and is lined with restaurants, cafés, ice cream parlours, and bars — most with outdoor seating directly overlooking the harbour. Traditional luzzu fishing boats are moored along the waterfront, giving the bay an authentic, working-village atmosphere. The promenade is popular for evening walks year-round.

Restaurants & Bars

The waterfront and surrounding streets have a strong selection of dining options. Angela’s Restaurant on Triq ix-Xatt is a well-regarded spot for Maltese and Mediterranean cooking. L-Iskaliz is a long-established local seafood restaurant. The Mad Hatter Bar on Mifsud Bonnici Square and Happy Hive café are popular casual options. Summer Nights on the promenade is a reliable family-friendly pizzeria. The dining scene in Marsaskala is predominantly local — unpretentious, good value, and focused on fresh fish and Maltese produce.

Swimming & Beaches

The bay itself has rocky entry points along the promenade, popular with locals year-round. St. Thomas Bay, a 10-minute walk or short drive south, is one of the most popular sandy swimming spots in the south of Malta. St. Peter’s Pool — a dramatic natural rock pool with crystal-clear water — is approximately 15 minutes by car and consistently rated among Malta’s best swimming spots.

Marsaxlokk Fishing Village

A 10-minute drive south brings guests to Marsaxlokk — Malta’s most famous fishing village and home to the island’s best-known Sunday morning fish market. The waterfront restaurants in Marsaxlokk are among the best places on the island to eat fresh fish.

Nature & Outdoor Activities

The Il-Maghluq nature reserve — a protected saltwater lagoon — borders the town to the south and is a designated Natura 2000 site. The coastal walking route between Zonqor Point and St. Thomas Bay passes old salt pans, boathouses, and quiet coves, and is one of the most scenic short walks in the south of Malta.

Parking

Street parking is available in and around the central Marsaskala area. No permit required.
